Invite friends, family, and co-workers to register for the 5K Walk for Foster Care.
You know me as someone that really cares about children. Recently I visited a website about America’s most vulnerable children and I was touched. I found out that over 800,000 children in America are in foster care. These children are the victims of repeated abuse and neglect and often times languish in the system for their entire childhood. Children in foster care are Hispanic, Asian, Pacific Islander, Native American, Caucasian, and disproportionately Black. California alone has over 74,000 kids in the foster care and Los Angeles Country has over 24,000 right here in our own back yard. This brakes my heart! I also learned that to make matters worse at age 18 these children are rejected from the system and lose most of the benefits that they rely on for support. As a result each year over 14,000 youth in foster care become homeless within two months of their 18th birthday. If current trends continue by the year 2020 there will be over 20 million children in foster care. All I can say is wow.! I decided that I could not sit back and let that happen without doing something to help these children. On Saturday, July 26th, iCare Foundation, ABC 7 Television, KJLH Radio, KDAY Radio, Casey Family Programs and other organizations are hosting the iCare 5K Walk For Foster Care at the Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena, California. I signed up and paid the $25 it cost to walk and gave an additional donation. I felt that that was the least I could do to help these children. What is heart warming about all this is that the organization was founded by singer/songwriter/producer – Kashif. He grew up in eight foster homes and went on to win six Grammy nominations and has produced hits and written for Whitney Houston, Kenny G., George Benson, Barry White, Janet Jackson, and a host of others. I am asking you as a friend to join me in this mission to help improve the lives of the over 800,000 children in foster care. Please visit www.walkforfostercare.org and sign up for the walk and give a donation. The organization’s logo says it all… I Walk To Show iCare!
